Vernon Jordan spoke at the American Library Association annual meeting about his book Make It Plain: A Life of Speaking (PublicAffairs; November 3, 2008). He explained how he and other African Americans rely on preaching and storytelling traditions in making speeches. He said these techniques are well-suited to give African Americans an opportunity to assert their rights and preserve and pass on their history and culture.
