The Supreme Court began its new term on Monday, October 6, 2008. Footage was shown of those attending the Red Mass at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle the previous day. The Mass is held the day before the new Supreme Court term.

America and the Courts featured two cases argued before the Supreme Court during the first week: Altria Group, Inc. v. Good, on Monday about the marketing of light cigarettes, and Winter v. Natural Resources Defense Council on Wednesday about the effects of the Navy’s use of sonar on marine animals. Reactions of the participants on the steps of the Supreme Court after the cases were argued was shown. Legal Times reporter Tony Mauro talked about both cases.
