Telephone lines were open for comments about President-elect Obama’s first news conference held in Chicago the previous day.
Jonathan Allen, a correspondent for CQPolitics.com, reported by telephone about the announcement made the previous day that Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) would step down as chairman of the Appropriations Committee, although he would remain a member of the committee. Senator Daniel Inouye (D-HI) would become chairman. close
