Historian David Williams talked about his book Bitterly Divided: The South’s Inner Civil War (New Press; August 1, 2008). He contends that throughout the Civil War the South fought an internal battle over secession. Mr. Williams recounts that many Southerners participated in armed anti-Confederate groups that challenged the Confederacy and as he argues redefined the commonly held belief of a united Southern front. He posits that there were as many Southerners that opposed succession as supported it.
