Secretary Robert Gates testified about challenges facing the Defense Department. In his remarks he indicted that efforts to combat terrorism in Afghanistan would remain a higher priority than nation building, and said the department would look to station more forces in the country. He also testified about military acquisition programs during an economic recession, as well as ethics rules which had adversely affected recruiting for senior department positions. close
