Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner testified about the new administration’s implementation of the Financial Stability Plan, formerly known as the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP). He spoke about the Obama administration’s new requirements intended to ensure that the $350 billion still available from the original $700 billion allocated by Congress would accomplish what the prior plan did not. Among the issue he addressed were provisions to jump-start lending, administrative and financial procedures used by banks, relief to housing markets, and strategies to restore confidence in the government’s response. Several members questioned the administrations plan because they felt it lacked detail.

This hearing was the first congressional testimony of the new treasury secretary. close
