Liaquat Ahamed talked about his book Lords of Finance: The Bankers Who Broke the World (Penguin Press; January 22, 2009). In his book he recounts that four of the world’s central bankers attempted to rebuild the global economy following World War I but instead contributed to the economic collapse that led to the Great Depression. Mr. Ahamed profiles the central bankers from England, Germany, France, and the United States and examines their collective fear of inflation, their interest in the gold standard, and their failed plans to stabilize the international economy. The guest interviewer was Gerald Seib, executive Washington editor of The Wall Street Journal.
Liaquat Ahamed has been a professional investment manager for twenty-five years and is currently an adviser to several hedge fund groups. Mr. Ahamed is a director of Aspen Insurance Company and is on the board of trustees of the Brookings Institution. He formerly worked at the World Bank.
Gerald Seib is the executive Washington editor of The Wall Street Journal where he writes the “Capital Journal” column. Mr. Seib was a member of the Wall Street Journal team that won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of the September 11 terrorist attacks. He is the author of Pennsylvania Avenue: Profiles in Backroom Power with John Harwood. close
