John Merriman talked about his book The Dynamite Club: How a Bombing in Fin-de-Siecle Paris Ignited the Age of Modern Terror (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt; February 12, 2009). In his book Professor Merriman recounts the detonation of a bomb in a Parisian cafe on February 12, 1894, by French anarchist Emile Henry. This attack against ordinary people was a precursor to the modern style of terrorism. He examines Henry’s ideological arguments for his act of indiscriminate violence and documents the ensuing years of attacks by other anarchists in public locations, which included the assassination of French President Sadi Carnot and U.S. President William McKinley. Professor Merriman responded to questions from members of the audience. close
