President Obama spoke about new auto emissions and efficiency standards. He said the agreement on national standards represented an historic milestone in the long negotiations and confrontation over the issue. The proposal raised fuel efficiency targets to 35.5 miles per gallon for new vehicles by 2016, four years earlier than required under the 2007 energy bill. He praised auto makers, unions and political leaders for their work to establish the standards that would reduce dependence on foreign oil and lower greenhouse emissions. close
