James Carroll talked about his book Practicing Catholic (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt; April 1, 2009). The book is a personal history of the American Catholic Church during his lifetime and a discussion about what it means to be a practicing Catholic today. In the book Mr. Carroll remembers his time in seminary and as a priest who served as chaplain of Boston University from 1969 to 1974, his decision to leave the priesthood, and explains why he is still a practicing Catholic while at times disagreeing with the church hierarchy. After Mr. Carroll’s talk, titled “The Story of American Belief,” Father Brett Hoover, CSP, commented on the book. After Mr. Carroll’s reply, both men responded to questions from members of the audience.

James Carroll is the author of numerous books, including House of War; Constantine’s Sword; and National Book Award-winning An American Requiem. He is currently a columnist for the Boston Globe and distinguished scholar in residence at Suffolk University. close
