Former Vice President Dick Cheney spoke and answered questions at a National Press Club luncheon for the presentation of the annual journalism awards from the Gerald R. Ford Foundation. Former Vice President Cheney, who was President Ford’s chief of staff, joined Jack Ford in presenting the foundation’s annual awards for outstanding coverage of the presidency to Kenneth Walsh and coverage of national defense to James Kitfield. Then he spoke about former President Ford and the legacy of the Bush administration and responded to questions submitted by members of the audience. Among the topics he addressed were interrogation techniques authorized by the Bush administration for detained prisoners, criticisms of the Bush administration’s policy toward Iraq, the bankruptcy filed by General Motors, and the future legality of same-sex marriages. close
