Harry Stein talked about his book "I Can’t Believe I’m Sitting Next to a Republican:" A Survival Guide for Conservatives Marooned Among the Angry, Smug, and Terminally Self-Righteous (Encounter Books; June 22, 2009). In his book he uses humor to explore the partisan divisions he sees in many aspects of society. He describes being a conservative locked in a community of liberals, both in his neighborhood and in his professional life. He details the difficulties he has had with family members since crossing the political spectrum from left wing to right, and about being misrepresented as a racist by the Dallas Morning News. Mr. Stein talked about his personal transition from being a liberal to a conservative while living in a "blue state". He also spoke about the role of academia in the restrictions of conservatives and the partisan division in contemporary politics. The guest interviewer was author and journalist Stefan Kanfer.
Harry Stein is the author of seven books, including Ethics and Other Liabilities and How I Accidentally Joined the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy: (And Found Inner Peace). He is also the author of six screenplays and has helped mold several publications including Esquire Magazine. Mr. Stein has also written articles for the New York Times Magazine and the Wall Street Journal.
Stefan Kanfer is the author of several novels, biographies, and social histories. He was a writer and editor at Time for more than twenty years and was its first bylined film critic, a post he held between 1967 and 1972.
The interview took place at BookExpo America 2009 in the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City, which was held May 28-31, 2009. close
