Author and historian John Ferling talked about his life and career. He was interviewed in the Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center at Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate. Scenes of the museum wee shown. Topics included the biography of George Washington, colonial America and the Revolutionary War, Presidents Adams and Jefferson, the election of 1800, and the peaceful transfer of power. Mr. Ferling responded to telephone calls and electronic communications.
John Ferling is professor emeritus at the University of West Georgia where he taught for thirty-three years. He is the author of ten book, including The Loyalist Mind: Joseph Galloway and the American Revolution; The First of Men: A Life of George Washington; Struggle for a Continent: The Wars of Early America; John Adams: A Life; Setting the World Ablaze: Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and the American Revolution; A Leap in the Dark: The Struggle to Create the American Republic (recipient of the 2004 Fraunces Tavern Book Award for best book on the American Revolution); Adams vs. Jefferson: The Tumultuous Election of 1800; Almost a Miracle: The American Victory in the War of Independence; and The Ascent of George Washington: The Hidden Political Genius of an American Icon].
