Warren St. John talked about his book Outcasts United: A Refugee Team, an American Town, published by Spiegel and Grau. In the book he explores the soccer program led by Luma Mufleh in Clarkston, Georgia, for refugee boys from war-torn countries in Africa, the Balkans, and the Middle East. They are highly disadvantaged because of hostility by residents of Clarkston that disapprove of the government moving refugees into their town, poor funding, and children who are highly traumatized by their violent past. Despite these challenges, the program has shown effectiveness in integrating the refugees and keeping them in school and out of gangs. Following his remarks, Mr. St. John answered questions from members of the audience. close
