Patrick Radden Keefe talked about his book The Snakehead: An Epic Tale of the Chinatown Underworld and the American Dream (Doubleday; July 21, 2009). In his book he tells the story of Cheng Chui Ping, also known as Sister Ping, who ran an illegal Chinese immigration ring during the 1980s and 1990s. Before being caught, Sister Ping amassed a multi-million dollar fortune and created a network that was so complex that it took the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) ten years to piece it all together. Mr. Keefe read passages from his book and talked about the ambivalent attitudes toward Sister Ping, reflecting the complexities of immigration policies, including the incident of the ship Golden Venture. He also read passages of his book and responded to questions from members of the audience. close
