Douglas Brinkley and David Taylor talked about the Great Depression. Topics included the importance and influence of the Works Progress Administration’s Writers Project. They responded to telephone calls from viewers who had just seen their talk in the History and Biography Pavilion of the 9th annual National Book Festival, held on the National Mall. The program opened with scenes of the authors making their way to the interview tent.

David Taylor is the author of Soul of a People: The WPA Writers' Project Uncovers Depression America (Wiley; February 9, 2009). He wrote and co-produced the documentary of the same name. 

Douglas Brinkley wrote the foreword to Soul of a People and contributed to the documentary. His latest book is The Wilderness Warrior: Theodore Roosevelt and the Crusade for America (Harper; July 28, 2009), which focuses on the environmental achievements of Theodore Roosevelt.
