Former employees talked about working at the White House. Topics included how they obtained their jobs and the difficulties of the transition between first families. They also responded to questions from members of the audience.

Gary Walters started working at the White House in 1970 and served as chief usher from 1986 until his retirement in 2007. Nelson Pierce worked 26 years as an assistant usher at the White House from 1961 until his retirement in 1987. Betty Monkman worked 35 years in the Curator’s Office from 1967 to 2002, including five years as the White House curator. Roland Mesnier was the White House executive pastry chef in 1980-2005. The moderator was James Deutsch, exhibition curator for “The Working White House.” close
