Michele Norris talked about her book, The Grace of Silence: A Memoir (Pantheon, 2010). Her examination of her family’s racial perceptions focused on her maternal grandmother’s short career as a traveling “Aunt Jemima,” which always embarrassed her mother, and her father’s shooting by a white policeman in Alabama in 1946 soon after Belvin Norris, Jr., was honorably discharged from the navy.

She was interviewed while at 10th annual National Book Festival, held on the National Mall. The program began with programming notes.
