Rachelle Bernstein talked about the results of a recent National Retail Federation study, and she responded to telephone calls and electronic communications. The study analyzed the economic effects of the imposition of a value added tax (VAT) to reduce projected federal deficits. The study concluded that a VAT would result in the loss of 850,000 jobs in the first year, reduce gross domestic product for three years, and bring a permanent drop in retail spending totaling $2.5 trillion over the first 10 years.
