State and Defense department officials spoke about the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) with Russia. Assistant Secretary of State Rose Gottemoeller and Principal Deputy Under Secretary of Defense Jim Miller presented the Administration’s case for the START treaty’s passage by the U.S. Senate.

The treaty is designed to lower the nuclear stockpiles of both nations by 1/3. President Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed the new treaty the previous April, and it required the support of 67 of 100 senators for ratification. close
