A wake was held for R. Sargent Shriver Jr. who died on January 18, 2011. Mr. Shriver, who was married to President John F. Kennedy’s sister Eunice, was the first director of the Peace Corps and the U.S. ambassador to France from 1968 to 1970. He served as the first director of the Office of Economic Opportunity in the Lyndon Johnson administration, developing the Job Corps and Head Start. He was George McGovern’s running mate in the 1972 presidential election.

Speakers included his children, House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, 1972 Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern, and Bill Moyers.  close
