Mike Thompson talked about changing prison policies as states grapple with budget gaps, and he responded to telephone calls and electronic communications. Some states are spending money to help ex-convicts find jobs to keep them from ending up back in prison and others are looking at private prisons. According to Pew Center on the States, the U.S. prison population has increased more than 700 percent in the past 40 years and states spend up to $50 billion every year on prison budgets.  close
