Descendants of former slaves who traveled the Underground Railroad to freedom in Michigan talked about their slave ancestors, the symbolism of their journey, and what they encountered along the way. Professor Finkenbine opened with an introduction to the Colored Vigilant Committee of Detroit and the importance of Detroit being on an international border. Slaves settled on both sides of the Detroit River in an area that came to be known as Midnight.

This is the first half of a two-part program.

“Our Underground Railroad Story: The Descendants Speak of the River” was a February 26, 2011, Black History Month presentation of the Detroit Historical Society at the Detroit Historical Museum. close
