Officials and others testified at a hearing on lessons that could be taken from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant crisis in Japan. They said the situation at Japan’s damaged nuclear power plant was “static” and that the key to long-term stability at the facility was to provide a reliable ability to cool the reactors and spent fuel pools. Earlier in the day Japanese officials raised the severity rating of their nuclear crisis to a level on par with the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in the former Soviet Union; considered the worst nuclear disaster in history. close
