Diane Brady recalled the efforts of the Reverend John Brooks, a theology professor at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, who, following the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968, traveled the East Coast and recruited black students to the college with the hope of realizing the Reverend King’s goal of an integrated society. The Reverend Brooks, the future president of the college, introduced several students to Holy Cross that year, who included a future Supreme Court justice, Clarence Thomas and a future winner of the Pulitzer Prize in literature, Edward Jones. Diane Brady also responded to questions from members of the audience. This event at the Harvard Club in Boston was the monthly luncheon of the Holy Cross Club of Greater Boston. Several alumni shared stories of the time, including former NFL player Eddie Jenkins, who was one of the five students profiled in the book. close
