Daniel Inouye was the first Japanese American to serve in both the U.S. House and Senate. He served until his death on December 17, 2012. In this 2008 oral history, Mr. Inouye talked about his dreams of being an orthopedic surgeon before he was wounded in combat during World War II with the famed 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the all-volunteer Japanese American unit. He reflected on his time in Congress and the legacy he hoped to leave. This oral history is part of a series produced by the U.S. Capitol Historical Society and Heritage Series. close
