Officials talked about a Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs report showing employment rose by 96,000 in August and unemployment was down to 8.1%. They said the job numbers weren’t enough to alleviate unemployment rates and that the participation rate in the workforce was at a 30-year low. They also said that the economy was growing at a “pedestrian pace” and that the “fiscal cliff” was the most important issue that Congress had to address in the short run. They responded to questions from the audience. close
