He said President Obama appreciated the service of Afghanistan War commander General John Allen, but confirmed that the general’s nomination to lead NATO had been put on hold. The Defense Department inspector general was investigating General Allen after receiving FBI material uncovered during its probe of former CIA Director David Petraeus.
