Republican representatives spoke to reporters following passage in the House of the STEM Jobs Act, which would stimulate the economy by making it easier for foreign students graduating with advanced degrees to stay in the U.S. by granting permanent residency visas for U.S.-trained math and science experts. The bill also allows for family reunification. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor also responded to questions about the Obama administration’s latest deficit package, saying it was “not a serious offer.” The plan, presented the previous day by Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, called for $1.6 trillion in tax increases, $50 billion in economic stimulus, and an end to congressional control over the national debt limit. close
