Education Secretary Arne Duncan called on community leaders to step up efforts to ensure safety in schools in response to the previous week’s school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, in his keynote address at a school safety forum at Neval Thomas Elementary School. Secretary Duncan said the recent mass shootings have “fundamentally changed” the world and addressed the need for comprehensive protocols and gun control measures, including access to mental health care, to protect students and teachers from violence. In addition, he announced a new round of Promise Neighborhoods grants which are awarded to organizations to improve educational and developmental outcomes for students. close
