Telephone lines were open for comments on the question, “Are school closures a civil rights issue?” A recent spate of school closings around the country led to a group of parents and activists meeting with Education Secretary Arne Duncan. They believe the shutdowns disproportionately affect minority and poor students, and want federal intervention to stop the closures.

Frank Phillips was interviewed by phone about the temporary replacement for Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, who was confirmed by the Senate the previous day to replace Hillary Clinton as secretary of state. He also discussed who might run for the seat in the June 25 special election. close
