The New America Foundation hosts a discussion on how unmanned aerial drones are being used in the U.S. for non-military purposes. Konstantin Kakaes gave an historical analysis comparing drones to previous new technologies such as nuclear power and GPS. Then a panel discussion looked at how law enforcement and journalism could use aerial drones. The technology had already been used to patrol U.S. borders, survey wildfires, and conduct police investigations and the FAA is in the early stages of crafting new aerial drone regulations.

“Bringing the War (Technology) Home” and “A Drone of Your Own” were part of the forum “The Drone Next Door,” held by the Future Tense partnership between the New America Foundation, Arizona State University and Slate magazine. close
