Former Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns gave an introduction to the history of U.S. diplomatic efforts as part of a Chautauqua lecture series. He stressed the need for the U.S. to return to diplomacy as the primary way to interact with the rest of the world and the role of military force. He addressed past and current U.S. diplomatic efforts and analyzed such foreign policy issues as the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, the Benghazi attack investigation, the Syrian civil war, and National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden. He responded to questions submitted by members of the audience to Thomas Becker. close
