Marilyn Holt and Edith Mayo talked about the life and influence of first lady Mamie Eisenhower and responded to telephone calls and electronic communications. Topics included the perception of Mamie Eisenhower as an icon of the 1950s woman. She held only one press conference as first lady but was an active campaigner. She was popular even before the presidency and was on best-dressed lists as a general’s wife. She managed their domestic life and the White House, including a record number of state visits. Live video was shown of Alyce Evans giving Peter Slen a tour of the Eisenhower’s only home at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In video clips, William Snyder displayed artifacts at the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene, Kansas.
Film and television clips were shown, including from a 1956 CBS special, a 1979 ABC News “20/20” interview with Barbara Walters, and a 1956 campaign ad.
