Ann Gerhart and Mark Updegrove talked about the life and influence of first lady Laura Bush and responded to telephone calls and electronic communications. They talked about her childhood in Texas, career as a teacher and librarian, founder of the Texas Book Festival and the National Book Festival, and support of her husband’s White House initiatives on education and HIV/AIDS awareness and malaria relief in Africa. Topics included her reputation as “the comforter-in-chief” following the terrorist attacks of 2001, her espousal of women’s rights in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime, White House renovations, and her continued support of African first ladies. Video clips shown included several from an October 2013 interview given by Laura Bush and a clip of an April 2013 interview with former President George W. Bush and their daughters.
