Veterans filing an initial claim for disability benefits were waiting an average of 346 days before receiving a decision from the Department of Veterans Affairs and over two years after filing an appeal. Retired U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Jessie Jane Duff, a member of the Concerned Veterans for America Organizing Committee, talked about the reasons behind the VA’s backlog of claims and how veterans are being affected by delays. She responded to telephone calls and electronic communications, including a line for veterans. Topics included the implications of the Navy Yard shooting earlier that week, as shooter was a former naval reservist. She also reacted to a video clip of President Obama speaking the previous month at the Disabled American Veterans National Convention in Orlando, Florida. close
