Following a live quorum call to bring all senators to the floor, Majority Leader Reid (D-NV) talked about the effect the government shutdown was having on military families, specifically the suspension of the death payouts for fallen service members. He reiterated Democrats' offer to go to conference on any issue as soon as the government was reopened. He then talked about a bill that would allow for a “clean” debt limit increase. Following his comments, Minority Leader McConnell (R-KY) rebutted some of Senator Reid’s points and decried the amount of debt and spending in the country. Senators Dick Dubin (D-IL) and John McCain (R-AZ) also spoke. close
