John Kingston talked by video uplink from New York City about the 40th anniversary of the 1973 OPEC oil embargo. In 1973, in response to U.S. support to Israel in the Yom Kipper War, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) banned the sale of OPEC oil to the U.S. and its allies. OPEC is an oil cartel whose purpose is to coordinate policies of oil producing countries. He talked about the history and current status of OPEC, the oil cartel’s role in providing crude to the world, and efforts by the U.S. and other countries to gain a greater degree of self-sufficiency in energy production. He responded to a video clip of a February 2, 1977, address by President Carter. He also responded to telephone calls and electronic communications. close
