David Finkel talked about Thank You for Your Service, a follow-up to his previous book, The Good Soldiers, and continues the soldiers' story. He said the book follows many of the same men as they return home and try to reintegrate to civilian life, and the challenges and triumphs experienced by the soldiers' wives and children. Mr. Finkel described Sergeant Adam Schumann as a true hero who returned home without a scratch but whose three tours of duty created many lasting personal issues. He detailed fights, attempted suicides, and many other dramatic moments that illustrate some of the effects on soldiers returning from war. He talked about the high suicide rate and chronic financial problems that plague some veterans. In addition, Mr. Finkel discussed his own writing style, his interest in journalism, and his process for putting a book together. close
