Professor Edward Berkowitz spoke about the history and policy of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which provides benefits to low-income elderly and disabled citizens. He argued that policy makers should examine the program from a historical perspective, as the media and politicians often distort the public’s view of the SSI and “welfare” in general. This event was co-sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the National History Center. close
