Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke and two of his predecessors, Paul Volcker and Alan Greenspan, made remarks at an event celebrating the 100th anniversary of the creation of the central bank with the signing of the Federal Reserve Act December 23, 1913. Each of the former chairmen recounted their time at the Fed and the crises they dealt with while at the Federal Reserve. Chair Bernanke also defended the Fed’s monetary policies thus far to recover from the current economic crisis. The event also included a ceremonial signing of a certificate commemorating the signing of the Federal Reserve Act by each of the current members of the Board of Governors and each Reserve Bank president. Short videos were shown about the history of the Federal Reserve.

This event at the Federal Reserve Board Building was held by the Federal Reserve System Centennial Sponsoring Committee, chaired by Jeffrey Lacker. close
