Residents of Point Roberts, Washington told their story about the hardships created by living in the area, and the consequences of Manifest Destiny and America’s westward expansion in the 1800s. Point Roberts, known locally as “Point Bob” or "The Point", is considered a geopolitical oddity. It is part of the United States, but not physically connected, and it lies south of the 49th parallel, which forms the Canada-U.S. border. In 2013, nearly 1500 American citizens live on the island.
C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2013 LCV Cities Tour” in Bellingham, Washington, from December 9-12 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Comcast local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on BookTV on C-SPAN2. close
