Shirley Hufstedler, former Secretary of Education under Jimmy Carter, talked about her life in the legal profession. Mrs. Hufstedler spoke about what it was like being one of the first females in the legal profession; she was one of two women at Stanford Law School in 1949. She also discussed working on Title 9, school busing, and discrimination in the work place legislation. In 1968, Shirley Hufstedler was appointed by President Lyndon Johnson to the U.S. Court of Appeals 9th Circuit, where she served for 11 years. President Jimmy Carter appointed her the first U.S. Secretary of Education in 1979 and she returned to practicing law in 1981. close
