In 1863, Union and Confederate forces fought for control of Chattanooga, known as the “Gateway to the Deep South.” The Confederates were victorious at nearby Chickamauga in September. However, Union troops were victorious in November and took control of the city. After the battle, a Confederate soldier ominously wrote, “This...is the death-knell of the Confederacy.”
C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2013 LCV Cities Tour” in Chattanooga, Tennessee, from December 15-19 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Comcast local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed.
