David Medine, chair of the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board (PCLOB), spoke about the National Security Agency’s (NSA) surveillance program. The PCLOB was created by Congress as an independent executive agency to advise the president. Mr. Medine talked about the report the board issued on January 23, 2014, on the NSA telephony metadata program and reform of the operations of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. He also talked about the continuing role of the board in overseeing federal counter-terrorism programs to ensure they strike the right balance between national security and privacy and civil liberties. Mr. Medine responded to questions from members of the audience. close
