Panelists talked about the violence that erupted in South Sudan in December 2013. Donald Booth, U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan and South Sudan, called the civil conflict in South Sudan “devastating,” with the roots of the problem running deep.

South Sudan gained independence from Sudan on July 9, 2011, when its people voted in favor of statehood in a referendum. The vote was made possible by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005, which ended over two decades of civil war between the government of Sudan and rebels in the South. close
