James Foster talked about his book, Bong Hits 4 Jesus: A Perfect Constitutional Storm in Alaska’s Capital, in which he discusses Morse v. Frederick, the Supreme Court case that addressed free speech in an American high school. In January 2002, as the Olympic torch was being carried down the main street of Juneau, Alaska, High School senior Joseph Frederick unraveled a banner reading “BONG HITS 4 JESUS.” The principal, Deborah Morse, ordered Frederick to immediately take down the banner. He refused saying that Morse was violating his First Amendment rights.
