Garfield Beckstead talked about Useppa Island’s connection to the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion and the secret Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) training that took place on the island. In early 1960, the CIA began psychological testing at Useppa Island on anti-Castro Cuban exiles from the Miami, Florida area. Useppa Island is located off the coast of Fort Myers, Florida.
C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2014 LCV Cities Tour” in Fort Myers, Florida, from March 16-21 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Comcast Cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed.
