Nick Timiraos talked about efforts in the Senate to revive the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act, which expired in December 2013. He argued that unless it was restored, homeowners who receive mortgage relief from lenders in 2014 would pay more because the forgiven debt would be treated as taxable income.
