Ilya Ponomarev, the only Russian lawmaker to vote against annexing Crimea, talked about Russian politics, Russia’s intervention in Ukraine, and U.S.-Russia relations. Mr. Ponomarev said that President Putin was using anti-fascism propaganda as a reason for Russia’s activities in Ukraine. He said Putin was framing the narrative as Russia liberating Ukraine from the western fascists currently in power.
Since Ponomarev’s vote against annexing Crimea, he was condemned as a “national traitor.” He was a member of the State Duma, Russia’s lower house of Parliament, representing Siberia’s largest city. close
